Equipment For Yoga

The amount of preparation needed to practice yoga is minimal. Still, there are a few items of yoga equipment that can be helpful for efficiency and comfort.

Clothing

Although there are no strict rules about what to wear for yoga exercises, most people find that loose, breathable clothing is the most comfortable and convenient. Sweat suits, shorts and T-shirts are the outfits most people opt for. For certain exercises where your head comes below your knees, you might want to wear a top that is tight to your body.

Shoes

As a general rule, yoga exercises are performed in bare feet. Most of the time, shoes are left near the entrance. To keep your feet warm you can wear light cotton socks.

Mats

Most yoga rooms have a large number of mats on the floor, one for each practitioner. These mats have various uses. First of all, they provide a useful boundary for personal space. The practice of yoga encourages the individual to harmonize mind and body, and that can best be done within separate, personal space.

Another reason for using mats is for comfort and stability. If you sweat, your hands or feet can get slippery and compromise your stability in some poses. A mat helps you stay focused on the routine. For beginners, a mat is especially recommended over hard, bare floors for comfort.

Blankets

It is common for yoga studios to have enormous piles of blankets. Do not hesitate to grab 1 or 2, because they come in handy during class. They can be used as props for exercises performed in difficult positions, and to cover up and prevent chills during relaxation at the end of the class.

Other Accessories

There are a number of other items, such as blocks and straps, which people use to improve their efficiency and comfort while doing yoga exercises. These items can be found on-line, in yoga catalogs, and in some sporting goods stores.
